ALL MULCHED OUT

Sunday 10 August, 2008 - 23:13 by Diane in Default

At last we have finished spreading the mulch and the garden looks good but it still needs  more shrubs planted in the spaces left after plants died in the drought last year. Needless to say I had a sore back and Bill's ticker played up after this effort.

fill the barrow

down the steep path

tip it out and go back up the steep path and do it all over again and again and again until it is all gone

now you can see the garden bags where the pile of mulch was.

Some here and......

here and........

Thats 20 metres of mulch spread and we're all mulched out.

Look I found a swiss garden gnome unfortunately not a swiss gnome.

WORK AND PLAY

Saturday 02 August, 2008 - 22:13 by Diane in Default

I couldn't stand seeing half the garden with mulch and the other half without, so I ordered another truckload. My back started wincing at the thought of moving it.

Friday afternoon the truck dumps 8 metres of red cypress mulch (not T-tree as I said in an earlier post.) but it looks as big as the prevoius 10 metre load.

Look there is a plant underneath the pile but its a tough curry bush. We worked for an hour but had to pack up to get ready to go out.

Last year I was on a committee to organise a reunion for teachers who trained at ASOPA for Papua/ New Guinea. Members of the committee became good friends and we continue to have lunches or dinners together. One of the guys organised a dinner to say farewell to Bill and I before we depart for Europe. It also happens to be Swiss National Day (as well as Horses' birthday). So off we went to the Bow Thai restaurant in the city.

We were all teachers in Papua/New Guinea in the 60's except for a few spouses.

Acknowledging Bill's home country on Swiss National Day.

Vegetable spring rolls

combination seafood and vegies (a bit too raw)

Bill had chicken curry

This morning, back into it.

Fill it!

wheel it!

dump it!

rake it!

stuff it!

The neighbour's wall is finished. They are spreading soil, turfing, planting and spreading mulch tomorow. It is all go in this street.

SURPRISE VISIT

Tuesday 29 July, 2008 - 18:13 by Diane in Default

Last weekend our lovely daughter had to come to Brisbane for work and she was able to visit us. We went to our favourite Chinese restaurant, where we have been going for about 20 years. We were given a table in a private area and a free bottle of wine. Their food is delicious too. Helen and Paul came too. They are also coming to Europe with us.

Mum, Dad and Sonya

I was so hungry that i gobbled half of ot before I remembered to take a pic. We had ginger chicken, sizzling prawns, combination hot pot, mongolian lamb, rainbow steak in a bird's nest and steamed rice.

EXCITEMENT IN THE RAIN

Thursday 24 July, 2008 - 18:46 by Diane in Default

Today was the day we had to go into town to pick up our travel documents. Woohoo!!

We drove with our friends, who are coming on holidays with us, to West End and then caught a City Cat to the city. It was raining, raining, raining and cold. But, hey, did we care?? We were on our way to pick up tickets for our trip.

On the City Cat on the Brisbane River in the rain. Can you see the Victoria bridge?

Getting closer but still raining. Can you see the William Jolly Bridge?

Then we grabbed our brollies and walked to the travel agent's office. She is a dear friend of ours and she went through the documents with us carefully and wished us a good holiday. We sheltered from the rain in The Coffee Club on the way back to the pier and had lunch. When we arrived home we checked out our goodies.

Airline tickets to Singapore, Zurich, Manchester. Manchester to Amsterdam. Budapest to Zurich, Hong Kong, Brisbane. Hotel vouchers for Singapore and Hong Kong. Car hire booking for Manchester. River cruise itinerary with tour books, document holder and backpacks. Swiss Train Pass and loads of other stuff. You need a bag to carry all the documents. What worries me there is a lot to easily misplace and get in a panic trying to find the relevent piece of paper. Can you guess I'm excited.

Our plan is to fly to Manchester, drive around Northern England and Scotland then fly to Amsterdam and get on a boat for a river cruise through Europe to Budapest. Then fly to Zurich, where our daughter joins us for  11 days of train trips around Switzerland. Wheeee! I'm getting butterflies just thinking about it.
